Minecraft: A Beginnerโs Guide
Welcome! Today, weโre exploring the world of Minecraft โ a game that has captured the imagination of millions across the globe. Whether youโre completely new to it or just want a clearer understanding, this guide will cover the basics and explore what makes Minecraft such a cultural phenomenon.
The Origins of Minecraft
Back in 2009, a version of Minecraft went online for PC gamers to try out. It was called an alpha build โ meaning the game was still in development, with updates and changes being made based on user feedback.
What made Minecraft stand out immediately was its unique look, reminiscent of retro games built with pixel art. But calling Minecraft just a โgameโ might be underselling it โ itโs more of a sandbox experience, offering players the freedom to shape the world however they choose.
How Do You Play Minecraft?
At its core, Minecraft is about exploration and creativity. You wander through a procedurally generated world, gathering resources to build structures, craft tools, and survive. Some resources are rare, encouraging players to venture deep into caves or climb towering mountains in search of precious materials.
But what makes Minecraft truly special is the variety of ways you can play, thanks to its four distinct game modes:
-
Survival Mode:
In this mode, you have a health bar and must gather resources to survive, all while defending yourself from enemies like zombies and the infamous creepers โ explosive monsters unique to Minecraft. -
Creative Mode:
If building is your passion, this is the mode for you. You have unlimited access to all resources and can fly around your map, creating massive structures without worrying about enemies or health. Players have built everything from real-life landmarks to sprawling fantasy castles. -
Adventure Mode:
Adventure Mode lets you experience custom-built maps created by other players. Some maps offer thrilling challenges, like navigating deadly traps or solving puzzles, while others are story-driven experiences shared with the community. -
Spectator Mode:
Want to explore without affecting the world? Spectator Mode allows you to observe other playersโ creations invisibly. Itโs perfect for checking out amazing builds or watching epic adventures unfold without getting in the way.
A Meteoric Rise to Success
Minecraftโs growth was nothing short of incredible. By January 2011, it surpassed one million purchases โ all through word of mouth and without any advertising.
The gameโs creator, Markus Persson (known as Notch), initially worked on the game alone. But as its popularity skyrocketed, he founded the company Mojang to manage development. In 2014, Notch sold Mojang โ along with the intellectual property rights to Minecraft โ to Microsoft for a jaw-dropping $2.5 billion.
By that point, Minecraft had already sold about 60 million copies and amassed 100 million users, making it one of the best-selling games of all time.
Expanding Beyond the Game
Once Microsoft took over, they expanded Minecraft far beyond its original form. They licensed spin-off games like Minecraft: Story Mode โ an adventure game set in the Minecraft universe, created by Telltale Games.
Minecraft also became a massive presence on platforms like YouTube and Twitch, where creators built entire careers by streaming their gameplay, creating tutorials, and hosting massive building competitions. Even schools began using Minecraft as a teaching tool, offering free or discounted access to students around the world.
In a unique project, the British Museum launched a plan to recreate its building and exhibits inside the game, inviting the public to help bring the virtual museum to life.
And if that wasnโt enough, Minecraft has its own annual convention called MineCon, which most recently welcomed around 10,000 attendees in London โ making it the largest convention dedicated to a single game.
The Future of Minecraft: Virtual and Augmented Reality
Minecraftโs evolution continues with exciting new technology. For example, itโs now available on several virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) platforms.
One particularly mind-blowing demonstration showed Minecraft running on Microsoft HoloLens โ an augmented reality headset. Players could project their Minecraft worlds onto flat surfaces, exploring them in entirely new and immersive ways.
More Than Just a Game
While Minecraft is technically a video game, itโs much more than that. Itโs a sandbox for creativity, a learning tool, and a social platform. Players can choose to build, explore, or survive, shaping their own experiences.
For some, itโs a way to connect with friends across the globe. For others, itโs a place to unleash their creativity, crafting incredible worlds block by block. Whether you want to survive the horrors that emerge at night or just fly through the skies admiring massive creations, Minecraft offers something for everyone.
Thatโs Minecraft โ a game that has grown far beyond its humble beginnings to become a global phenomenon.
What about you? Do you play Minecraft? Have you built something incredible or explored a mind-blowing creation?

The music in the background makes me feel like something incredibly sad is about to happen. But maybe the sadness is just that Iโve never played Minecraft. Or is the sadness that Iโm a twenty something year old who is too old to play mine craft? This is the kind of music they play at the end of a documentary when someone dies... this song makes me feel like Iโm missing out on a secret.

Minecraft is a sandbox video game developed by Mojang Studios. Created by Markus "Notch" Persson in the Java programming language and released as a public alpha for personal computers in 2009, the game was officially released in November 2011, with Jens Bergensten taking over development around then. Minecraft has since been ported to various platforms and become the best-selling video game of all time, with 200 million copies sold across all platforms and 126 million monthly active users as of 2020.

DID YOU KNOW THAT Archeology Unearth the secrets hiding beneath the Overworldโs sandy surface! Dig to find buried ruins and brush fragile sand blocks to extract pottery sherds. Hanging signs Hang signs beneath or on the side of a block using any wood type you desire. However you want to tell your Minecraft story, hanging signs wonโt let your messages down! Bamboo Set Bamboo is not only decorative, itโs functional too! Craft with bamboo in the same way that you would with any other wood type. Bamboo brings you a unique mosaic block and a raft. Chiseled bookcases The chiseled bookshelf is a functional block that allows you to store and retrieve books, written books, enchanted books, and quills. Integrate redstone to make it the smartest bookshelf of all time! In the Overworld, at least. Camel The camel is a monumental mob that you can saddle, tempt, and breed. Tall enough to keep you out of reach from melee mobs, but with space for two โ the camel can dash you to safety or bring a friend to help you fight! Playable mob sounds Turn up the Overworldโs volume with playable mob sounds! Place a mob head on a note block to play that mobโs ambient sounds, including the brand-new piglin mob head! FUN FACT

I see a lot of people in the comments saying negative things about the game without even playing it ever before. I have to say, even if it looks like it may be boring, you gotta try it out. This five minute video can't show all the endless possibilities and limitless creations you can make. It's like an adventure but you can stray off from it and do WHATEVER you want. That's the amazing part, it's freedom all around. It's things you can do which you would never be able to do in, say, the real world. So please try the game, get a bit used to it, and then debate on if you enjoyed it or not. (Also, the video didn't mention redstone, a rather important part of the game) but great video anyways
